HOLY ICONS

Images have played an important role in the public and private worship of Byzantium and gained a dominant role in the Church's functional life after iconoclasm and the restoration of the Holy Icons (843). Icons are placed in various places in the Church: on the icon stands, on the temple, on the walls, on the vestries, in the chapels, etc., and are in religious processions at certain times. Long before the use of wood for their manufacture was spread, they were made of various materials and with different techniques. During the long Byzantine (4th-15th cent.) and post-Byzantine (15th-19th centuries) tradition the painting of icons is adapted to the visual expressions of the time and region, inextricably linked to the creator's abilities and education. In this section are presented selected icons from the 18th to the 20th centuries, coming from workshops of mainly mainland Greece, of various painting trends and expressions, as well as pictures of Russian technique.
